Wishaw Park And Ride Opens
A new park and ride has opened in Wishaw, thanks to a joint initiative between the council and Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT).
The 40-space car park is located at Belhaven Road and includes three bays for disabled drivers.
SPT provided £220,000 for the construction work, and will now maintain the facility which is fully lit and monitored by CCTV cameras.
"By working in partnership with SPT, we have been able to create much-needed parking for people using Wishaw rail station which also frees up space in other local car parks for shoppers," said Councillor James Coyle, Convener of Planning and Transportation.
"With street lighting and CCTV cameras, the park and ride is safe for commuters returning to their cars in the evenings and we hope it will encourage more people to use public transport."
Councillor Kaye Harmon, SPT Vice Chair, said: "This is an excellent example of SPT and the local authority working together to deliver strategic transport solutions that improve connections for the travelling public and hopefully gets people out of their cars and onto public transport for part of their journey.
"This is a great new asset for North Lanarkshire. Wishaw is a busy station and this additional parking is already benefitting passengers, in particular those with mobility requirements. The new car park has created more disabled parking bays, which enables people with mobility issues to access both sides of the station."
