Work Begins On Veteran Housing
Houses for Heroes Scotland is the appeal name of the Scottish Veterans Garden City Association, a registered charity founded in 1915, which is committed to providing reasonably priced rental housing for disabled veterans in Scotland.
They have 614 homes in 74 locations throughout Scotland housing those who have served in the British Armed Forces, Merchant Navy, Police or Fire Brigade and have been partially or totally disabled.
Peter Shepherd, director at Mactaggart & Mickel Contracts, said: “This project is one of the first we have been involved in with Houses for Heroes Scotland and I have every confidence it will prove to be successful for all involved. Our extensive construction experience and commitment to effective design has allowed us to offer value for money without compromising on quality of build.
“It is particularly gratifying and such an honour to help construct homes for our ex-service men and women. These homes will make such a difference to the lives of their residents, helping them retain their independence and freedom.”
Lieutenant Colonel Richard Callander, chairman of Houses for Heroes Scotland, added: “This project, which is part of a Scotland wide new build programme, is especially gratifying as we enter our centenary year and which we can share with the 90th anniversary of Mactaggart & Mickel Group.”
A partnership between Mactaggart & Mickel Contracts and Graham + Sibbald will deliver a total of ten bespoke residential units built in both Motherwell and Wishaw for Houses for Heroes Scotland.
The rented bungalows are being built on land which has been made available through North Lanarkshire Council who are signatories to the Armed Forces Covenant.
