Schoolgirl gives up sugar Anna Hutchison whilst Angela McCormack receives cheque

Anna Hutchison enjoyed sweet success – after raising hundreds of pounds for a cancer charity by giving up sugar.

The big-hearted ten-year-old did without all her tasty treats for two weeks in a bid to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Care.

And the Woodside Primary pupil enjoyed the taste of success after she collected £257 for the charity.

Proud dad Kenny said: “It was a great thing for her to do. You would have thought someone in the family or someone she knew would have had cancer or been involved with Macmillan, but there was no connection. It came out of her head, after she had watched an advert on TV.

“She was on a two-week sugar-free challenge. Fair play, she stuck to it and did really well.

“What she missed was coming in from school and getting her treat, she couldn’t do that.

“She had a bit of a sugar frenzy after it. We let her have pancakes with Nutella before going to school that day.”

The senior fundraising manager for Macmillan in Lanarkshire, Angela McCormack, thanked the youngster for her efforts.

Angela said: “I’m really thankful to Anna. She saw an advert on TV and was inspired to do some fundraising. Anna totally had the idea and concept herself.

“It was a great idea and quite unique. We’ve had older people abstaining from the likes of alcohol, but never someone so young doing something like this.

“I went out to meet Anna and her mum and dad, and I’m so grateful to her.”
