Best individual award winners

Gary Lindsay (S4 - S6) and Eve Hindshelwood (S1 - S4) both students from Larkhall Academy

Hundreds of school pupils boogied on down to Hamilton Town House for South Lanarkshire’s annual dance competition.

The talented youngsters had been rehearsing hard and brought the house down when they took centre stage.

Larkhall Academy were one of the big winners, with two pupils picking up prizes for best individual performance in their age bracket.

Eve Hinshelwood won the S1 to S3 contest and said: “Although I choreographed our routine, we all worked together as a team — I couldn’t have done it without my friends.

“I really didn’t expect to win but it wasn’t me that won — it was Larkhall Academy”

And after triumphing in the S4 to S6 contest, Gary Lindsay said: “I was thrilled to win Best Individual Performer in this competition — it was totally unexpected, to be honest.

“I was so pleased that I was able to win this award for Larkhall Academy.”

The Best Choreography Award went to Lesmahagow High.

Lesmahagow’s choreography was put together by S6 pupils Hannah Mitchell. She said: “We were inspired by a warrior theme this year and worked hard to create a dance to the standard expected of the competition.

“We were humbled and surprised to win not only one but two awards that evening due to the standard of competition. This was a great way to finish off my last year dancing with the school.”

Now in its sixth year, South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture Active Schools Dance Secondary Competition has come of age with pupils taking the lead.

The competition is a major event on the extra-curricular calendar and over 250 young people took to the stage.

The coming of age was marked with Active School’s coordinators handing over the reins and
pupils taking the lead on developing their own choreography and running their rehearsals.

This has been supported by Y Dance delivering a Level 1 in Dance Leadership to pupils from South Lanarkshire.

The winners were:

Best Choreography, Lesmahagow High School;

S1-S3 Best Team Performance, Carluke High School;

S1-S3 Best Individual Performer, Eve Hinshelwood, Larkhall Academy;

S4-S6 Best Team Performance, Lesmahagow High School,
