New figures have revealed that the population of Lanarkshire is 653,310.

The National Records of Scotland reveals the numbers living here continue to rise.


There are 337,950 people living in North Lanarkshire and 315,360 in South Lanarkshire.

North Lanarkshire had 163,403 males (48.4 per cent) and 174,547 females (51.6 per cent).

From June 30, 2013, to June 30, 2014, the population of North Lanarkshire rose by 220 (0.1 per cent).

However the 10-year figure from June 30, 2014, witnessed a rise of 12,550 (3.9 per cent) from 325,400.


The average age in North Lanarkshire is 40 with 19 per cent of the population aged under 16, 63 per cent of working age; and 18 per cent pensioners.


Migration in North Lanarkshire had 6,906 arrive and 7,003 leave. Of those arriving, 75 per cent came from elsewhere in Scotland, 18 per cent from elsewhere in the UK and seven per cent from overseas.
