More Hoax Bomb Threats

Three high schools in Lanarkshire were subjected to hoax bomb threats on Tuesday 14th June.

In addition to the hoax call made to Bellshill Academy, Police Scotland confirmed calls were made to Carluke High School and Calderside Academy, in Blantyre.

Officers say there was no information to suggest that these were nothing other than hoax calls.

Pupils at Bellshill Academy were evacuated but later returned to their daily routine.

However pupils at Calderside Academy and Carluke High School were not evacuated.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland explained: “Every scenario is different and on this occasion neither school was evacuated.

“Although this decision ultimately rests with the Head Teacher, he/she is fully supported by the senior police officer in attendance who is him/herself in possession of specialist information.

“The decision not to evacuate may alarm parents/carers, however, please understand that there are circumstances where moving such a large amount of people from one place to another, prior to being in possession of all the necessary facts, can place them in greater danger.

“Neither the school staff or police would do anything to increase the risk to your children, whose conduct during this period was exemplary.

“Both schools were searched by police and staff. Nothing untoward was found and an investigation has been launched in order to identify the person or persons responsible.

“We take hoax calls incredibly seriously. The disruption this and other such incidents has caused to the teaching staff, emergency services, local residents and in particular the school children involved cannot be overstated. If you are a parent/carer please ensure that your child’s school has up to date contact details for you and your family.

“If anyone has any information relating to this incident please report it at any police office, via 101 or through Crimestoppers on 0800-555111.”

A spokesperson for South Lanarkshire Council said: “The school received a hoax bomb call which was investigated by police.

“The call was not considered credible by police and deemed not appropriate to evacuate.”
