Man Banned From Church
A parishioner has been banned from St John Ogilvie Church in Blantyre, after officers were called to a confrontation between him and a replacement priest at mass.
“I did call him a p**** and an a*******, but I didn’t threaten him.”
Brian Madden, 58, who has been going to the church for 20 years said the row was sparked by tensions over the suspension of a previous priest and revealed he is set to be quizzed by police under caution. Father Matthew Despard was suspended in 2013 after publishing a book called Crisis in the Priesthood, which accused the Catholic Church in Scotland of covering up sexual bullying.
Brian, from West Lothian, claims his row with Father Brian Lamb broke out when his sister was confronted over collections organised for the suspended priest. He said he approached the minister after Saturday night mass and told him that he was unhappy with the way his sister had been spoken to. Brian said: “I did call him a p**** and an a*******, but I didn’t threaten him.”
Father Lamb said: “In my 26 years as a priest, I’ve never been spoken to like that.”
