Lanarkshire Baby Bank
Lanarkshire Grandmother Bernadette Murphy and MP Marion Fellows
A Cleland grandmother has set up a new organisation to help provide struggling parents with baby essentials.
Lanarkshire Baby Bank is the brainchild of Bernadette Murphy who learned of the need while working at a food bank. Bernadette said: “One in four children in Lanarkshire is living in poverty and going without basic needs being met.
“We identified a real need and hope to alleviate these problems with donations of nappies, baby wipes, baby milk and food as well as items like cots, bedding and sippy cups.
“I found during previous work with food banks that very few baby items were donated. Some children were also improperly dressed for the winter weather. As a nana, my heart goes out to them.”
Motherwell and Wishaw MP Marion Fellows met with Bernadette to congratulate her on her work supporting local families and to discuss what could be done to support her in the future.
Mrs Fellows said: “Tory cuts and welfare sanctions have led too many people struggling to get by and pillars of our community like Bernadette must be recognised for their hard work.
“Only last week, it was reported the number of children living in temporary homeless accommodation in North Lanarkshire had risen.
“Lanarkshire Baby Bank is aiming to tackle the poverty that many of these children face. I want to stand up for people which is why I am going to start holding regular surgeries at food banks to help those struggling to get by in whatever way I can. During this difficult time it is essential we pull together as a community to make sure no child is left behind and is given the best possible start in life.”
