A new postnatal depression support group was launched in Hamilton.

It has already been helping women in Uddingston who have endured the emotional and physical effects of the condition.

Mum-of-two Sally Tyrell set up the group after the arrival of her second child in 2013.

The 36-year-old said: “I was diagnosed with severe post natal depression and on the brink of suicide. There were no support groups in Lanarkshire for me to go to.

“I felt extremely isolated, including a lack of support from the NHS. In fact I ended up paying for counselling at Bluebell Postnatal Depression Services in Glasgow, who I can honestly say saved my life.

“Now fully recovered, I am voluntarily working with NHS Lanarkshire and Bluebell to improve support and services for families living with perinatal mental illnesses.”

The Lanarkshire Post Natal Depression Support and Awareness Group met on Monday at Settlers Cafe in Castle Street.

And the town’s MP and MSP, Angela Crawley and Christina McKelvie, joined the families.

Ms McKelvie said: “Angela and I were both shocked and sympathetic when we heard Sally’s personal story. Though postnatal depression is often quickly diagnosed, ways to find meaningful support can be almost impossible to track down.

“By sharing what you’re going through with other people in the same place, you can start to rebuild your confidence and emotional security. Self-help is hugely important, because really only women who have experience of the condition will know just how tortuous it can be.”

Sally, of Hamilton, added: “I was initially treated for anxiety until my health rapidly deteriorated to the point I was suicidal.

“I want to be able to help other women who are finding themselves in a similar position.”

The group will meet every Monday from 12pm to 1.30pm,at Settlers Cafe, which will be closed to the public. It also meets every Thursday from 9.30am to 11am at Jollytots and Cookies Cafe, 71 Old Mill Road, Uddingston.
