G72 Tri Open Day

27/06/15

G72 Tri are holding a ‘come and try’ day at Blantyre Sport Centre on July 25, when club coaches and experienced members will give people the opportunity to investigate triathlon.

Club president and head coach Martin Jones said: “G72 Tri is Lanarkshire’s newest triathlon club, formed in 2013 by former members of Blantyre Swimming Club, who had taken part as individuals in one or two events. Three of us decided to put more structure to our training by forming a club and, under the tutelage of Shona Girdwood from South Lanarkshire Leisure, G72 Tri was born.

“Given that we are a new club, our ambitions are focused around building on the base that we have established, improving the ability of existing members and making ourselves known to people in Lanarkshire who would like to try Scotland’s fastest-growing sport.

“We have secured lottery funding and purchased club bikes, which will allow prospective members to try the sport without the initial cost outlay.

“From chatting to G72 members it was clear that many had been interested in trying the sport but had been put off by concerns over their swimming.

“Given my background in competitive swimming, it has been particularly satisfying to see the huge improvements made in this area through our structured coaching programme. We now regularly have in excess of 20 swimmers at Monday sessions.”

The club has had some successes in the two years they’ve been operating. A club relay team took second place in the Commonwealth Games test event in 2014 and one of their juniors, Andrew Hutcheson, finished second in the Scottish Olympic Distance Championships at Strathclyde Park in May. At the Bishopbriggs Triathlon in April, G72 Tri had the second-largest number of competitors of any club in Scotland, in what is one of the most popular events.

Numbers are growing by the week, and there are 50 athletes of all ages and abilities. G72 hold coached run sessions on a Wednesday night and a group run at the weekend. They cycle outside on a Tuesday, and move indoors on a Thursday.

Their main coached swim session is on a Monday night at Blantyre, with a second session on Thursday night in Hamilton.
