Cumbernauld Film Studio Allowed To Expand

13/05/16

A film studio in North Lanarkshire used by the hit TV series Outlander has won permission to expand. The decision paves the way for Wardpark Studios to grow its site in Cumbernauld by 30,000 sq ft to 78,000 sq ft. Its chairman Terry Thomson said: "We're confident we can make this expansion a commercial success."

However he admitted they still need to confirm funding for the development - including public sector support of up to £4m.

North Lanarkshire Council has granted planning permission for new site access, car parking and building alterations.

Mr Thomson said the studio was "committed to making this expansion happen".

But he added: "We still have work to do before we can fully embrace the expansion project.

"We need to finalise our business plan, confirm some commercial arrangements to ensure we can fund the development and agree the potential package of public sector support.

"We've already attracted Sony's award-winning historical drama Outlander's first and second series, and we know there is demand from other international and indigenous productions for purpose-built studio facilities in Scotland."

Earlier this year Culture Secretary Fiona Hyslop told Holyrood's Economy Committee that ministers could provide up to £4m to help with the project.

The Scottish producer of Mad Max: Fury Road said it was a "disgrace" that more progress had not been made on a national film studio for Scotland.

David Smith, director of creative industries at Scottish Enterprise, said they were committed to working with the private sector to develop the film industry.

"Securing this planning permission is a further milestone for Wardpark Studios and their ambitious expansion plans," he said.

"UK production spend continues to grow as a result of tax relief schemes, creating strong demand for studio space across the UK which Scotland can exploit through private sector developments such as Wardpark Studios.

"We and our Film Studio Delivery Group partners remain fully committed to working with the private sector to support additional screen infrastructure developments in Scotland. We remain keen to hear from any developers with projects they want to bring forward."
