St Leonard’s Primary are heading to the Euroquiz national final after coming top in the nail-biting all East Kilbride South Lanarkshire final.

Pupils Stefan Nillson, Aidan Tuohy, James McCormack, Carter Sinclair and Orla Cavanagh beat off stiff competition to win their place in the national final of the Scottish European Educational Trust competition.

Four pupils from 15 schools took part in the South Lanarkshire heat on Feb

East Kilbride schools came out top on the day taking the top three places, with St Vincent’s Primary in third and St Kenneth’s coming in second.

St Leonard’s won the final round against St Kenneth’s which finished 10-7.

The final is set to take place at the Scottish Parliament in May where St Leonard’s Primary will fly the flag for South Lanarkshire against 30 other local authority teams.

As well as questions covering history, geography, sport, culture, and the EU, this year’s Euroquiz had a language round where pupils can test their knowledge of French, German, Spanish or Italian.

Chair of education resources, Councillor Jean McKeown, said: “All the teams taking part showed a fantastically broad range of knowledge ranging from knowing the currency of Hungary is the Forint through to understanding European languages.

"I would like to congratulate all of the pupils and teachers who were involved in preparing for and competing in the quiz and especially to St Leonard’s who I am sure will take the good wishes and support of all of South Lanarkshire to the national final.”
