Dalzell Bowler Is Called Up

01/08/15

Fraser Simpson believes it is a ‘dream come true’ to represent Scotland.

The 17-year-old Dalzell Bowling Club member was called up to play for the Scotland under-18 team at the International Series in August.

The tournament, hosted by Scottish Young Bowlers Association, takes place in Belfast and will see the youngster compete against the Northern Ireland team.

Fraser is a two-time Lanarkshire under-18 champion and despite his age preventing him from winning a third title, he believes the Scotland call-up is the icing on the cake.

He said: “I couldn’t believe it when I found out, it’s like a dream come true.

“I’ve been playing bowls since I could walk so it feels great to see it pay off.

“I can’t win the Lanarkshire championships again because I’ll be too old but getting a call-up for Scotland more than makes up for that.

“I have no aims for the tournament right now, I just want to go out there and enjoy it as much as I can.”

The competition will feature various disciplines, such as singles, pairs and triples, and the former Clyde Valley High School pupil was made to wait to find out about his call-up.

The apprentice partsman was thrilled after eventually hearing about his selection and is already looking to the future as he targets more international success.

He said: “The coordinator for Lanarkshire bowls found out at first about my call-up and I didn’t know. After that, they called for a meeting with my mum and dad to tell them.

“Thankfully, they didn’t keep me waiting and they told me as soon as they found out.

“I think they were almost as excited as I was. We don’t have any celebrations planned for it, but I’m just going to go out and enjoy the weekend.

“Being at under-18 level is good for me as I can go up to the under-25s if I do well here.

“Then after that, hopefully I can make my way in to the seniors but that’s a long way off.

“Right now, I’m just looking forward to the International Series.”

Dalzell Bowling Club have already had international success this year with namesake John Simpson, who represented Scotland’s senior team at the International Series in Edelwood, Hamilton last month.

The 50-year-old won all three of his matches, with Scotland finishing second place behind England.

A Dalzell Bowling Club spokesman was thrilled at the continued success at the club.

He said: “We’re delighted for Fraser after a great year last year.

“We all wish Fraser the very best of luck and hope he enjoys the great experience.

“We know he will play well and do us all proud, congratulations Fraser.”
