Charlie And The Bhoys Gig Cancelled
A sold-out gig, at the Cambuslang Institute on Greenlees Road, was cancelled by South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture Trust, which is funded by South Lanarkshire Council, who had concerns for the safety of their staff if it went ahead.
The concert drew complaints from some sections of the community, while a group calling themselves “Regimental Blues” claim they will hold a protest after being approached by locals unhappy at the show taking place in a council facility.
South Lanarkshire Council and Rutherglen Police were monitoring the situation, but took the decision at lunchtime today to cancel the booking.
Protestors claim Charlie and the Bhoys regularly flout anti-sectarian laws by singing pro-IRA anthems.
However, organisers of the gig insisted it was to have been a Celtic Night, with no republican music.
A South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture Trust spokesman said: “After discussions with Police Scotland and taking the concerns of our staff members into account, we have no choice other than to cancel this booking. We have apologised to the organisers for the late notice of this cancellation, but in recent days the risk to public safety associated with the event has increased.
“As an organisation we respect the right to freedom of speech and expression, and so we make our premises available to a wide range of organisations from all sectors of society. It is regrettable that this particular booking has led to a situation where there is an unacceptable risk to the public or our staff.”
