Police Scotland Rubbish Abduction Claims
Police Scotland rubbished online reports of the ‘attempted abduction’ of a toddler in Motherwell, and insisted the incident simply ‘did not happen’.
A Facebook post - seemingly from a grandmother explaining that two Asian men had tried to abduct her grandson in the town’s Asda store - caused mass panic online on Monday evening 3rd November.
The woman was told of the ‘incident’ and acted in good faith to raise awareness.
The status was then shared thousands of times as worried parents spread the word.
A spokesman for Police Scotland said: “There have been a number of comments on social media regarding the attempted abduction of a young boy from Asda in Motherwell.
“Police Scotland has carried out extensive enquiries into this claim and officers have established the incident did not happen.
“Police Scotland takes incidents of this nature extremely seriously and will fully investigate them.
“If you wish to report a crime, please do not use social media to do so, please speak directly to the police via the 101 number.”
